IS-3 Soviet Heavy Tank

Description

Yet another image redone from Company of Heroes Eastern Front. As usual the image was not easy to edit with all the HUD icons everywhere but otherwise I enjoyed editing it.

The IS-3 was one of Soviet Russia's more imposing tanks packing a 122mm main gun, rounded turret and pike-nose configuration. While it was too late for the final battle in Berlin at the end of the war in Europe the IS-3 did serve in the victory parades. During these parades, the brutal appearance and peculiar pike-nose configuration worried many of the Western nations and sparked a set of fairly rapid heavy tank programs most notably from the US, England and France. These culminated in the US M103 and T110 series heavy tanks, the British Caernarvon and Conqueror heavy tanks and the French AMX 50 heavy tank. However as fearsome as the IS-3 looked, it was not as effective as it seemed for number of reasons. This included the pike-nose which, if struck in certain places with high explosive shells, could split, the tank's turret was heavily armoured but had abysmal gun depression that meant even slight bumps could cause issues, the engine was prone to failures and the 122 mm gun, while devastating in close ranges, simply lacked adequate stabilization and optics to efficiently engage in long range fights. As the cold war progressed from its infancy, so did armoured vehicles culminating in the MBT which rendered heavy tanks inferior. It should be noted that during the 6-day war, Egypt did possess a number of IS-3s which, when fielded against the Israeli Pattons (Magach in Israel) the tank proved a tough nut to crack making head on assaults almost impossible and a flanking maneuver was  required to neutralise it.

The tank in the background is the KV-1, an early-WWII heavy tank with relatively thick armour for the time and a gun efficient in dispatching early Panzers. The most notable accolade of the KV-1 was that the chassis served as a base for the Tiger counterpart IS series tanks later on in the war. Although the two may look quite different, the IS-3 is essentially a derivative of the KV-1 chassis.
